Text Box: About The SS Beaver

The MV "S.S.BEAVER" was built in originally in 1956/57 for the navy as an steel twin-screw ammunition lighter.

In 1965/66 the vessel was converted to a replica of the original vessel of that name, recognized as the first paddle side wheelers operating around Vancouver Island in the 1830's. The conversion retained the same hull and twin screw propulsion of the munitions vessels but wood hull cladding from waterline up was added to the existing steel hull and masts and rigging installed. New side wheel paddles of a free wheeling type were also added to the vessel amid ships port and starboard. She ran under Royal Canadian Naval supervision. travelling up and down the BC coast calling in most of the ports and being shown off from 1966 to 1971. In 1971 she was sold off for
$6000.00. She was expected to be scrapped!

But miraculously she was saved and continued to be operated by a successions of owners in Vancouver Harbour. During this time an upper-works refit was completed in 1977 to make her what she looks like today. A large dining saloon was added forward on what is now the main deck, with a discothèque under, in what was formerly the munitions Hold. There are washrooms and an office off this area and a serving bar to the aft end of the saloon. The servery is aft along with the gift store and the upper Boat Deck offers an external area from where passengers can sit and view the surroundings. The middle 19850s replica Wheelhouse is forward.

In 1995 she was moved to Victoria to operate for 5 years until 1999 where she was laid up in Fisherman's Wharf mouldering away until 2004 when a total refit of the wooden hull, engines and all parts was started.  What you see today is the result of 4 years of hard work and loving care.
